Information for Individuals Wishing to Serve on BPM
The Board of Podiatric Medicine (BPM) is the semi-autonomous unit of the Medical Board that licenses Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs). The BPM Board itself is composed of seven individuals: four licensees appointed by the Governor and three nonlicensee "public members." The Governor appoints one of these public members and the Senate Rules Committee and Speaker of the Assembly appoint the other two members.
Sections 2462-2466 of the Business & Professions Code specify requirements and terms of appointment. Sections 450-451 provide additional qualifications for public members. A full term is four years. Members can be reappointed for a second term and also serve an additional "grace" year as long as a new appointment is not made. The Board holds one-day meetings about four times a year, rotating locations between the Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego areas. State law provides that Board members are paid $100 per day for such meetings, as well as travel, hotel, and meal expenses.
Besides meetings of the Board, there may be one or two committee meetings each year, depending on the member's committee assignments. There is also weekly mail to review in order to maintain oversight of the Board's operations and five-person staff, and about ten proposed disciplinary cases a year sent out with mail ballots that require study and response.
Individuals interested in serving on the Board should contact the appointing authority to request an application form. For appointments by the Governor, please visit the Governor's web site at http://gov.ca.gov/, or contact:
